ABOUT REAL RECOVERY

SURGICAL PREPARATION & REHABILITATION

Hip Replacement at 54

“I began seeing Dena for hip pain that just wouldn’t quit after overdoing it playing pickleball. While I was making some progress after a few sessions, Dena wasn’t fully satisfied with my results. She encouraged me to see my GP and request x-rays—on both hips, not just the one giving me trouble.

To my surprise, the imaging revealed severe osteoarthritis in my right hip and moderate degeneration in the left. Thanks to Dena’s keen clinical eye, my doctor fast-tracked me for surgery at just 54 years old.

I followed Dena’s pre-surgical protocol, and I’m so glad I did. I barely needed any physiotherapy afterward, and I was back to playing golf within four months and back on the pickleball court that fall!  I really appreciated that she suggested the x-rays when she did because I could have really wasted a lot of time and money on all kinds of therapy that wouldn’t have made a difference at that time.”

Hip Replacement - She Really Gives a Damn

“Before my hip replacement, I was in constant pain and struggling just to stay mobile. I had tried everything—physio, other massage therapists, stretching, you name it—but nothing really worked. Dena was the only one who could get deep enough with her massage to actually release the tight spots and give me real relief. It made a huge difference. Her deep tissue work gave me more movement and helped me manage the pain way better than anything else I’d tried.

She didn’t just stop at massage either. She put together a personal exercise plan for me that fit what I could handle, and she worked through it with me. She was always checking in to see how I was doing and adjusted things as needed. She really paid attention and made it feel like my recovery actually mattered to her.

After the surgery, she came right to my house to keep things going. She followed the surgeon’s timeline and worked with me on the rehab exercises, making sure I was doing things right but not pushing too far. That kind of support was huge—it helped me stay on track without getting overwhelmed.

What really stuck with me is how she checked in on me at every phase—not just during appointments, but in between too. She genuinely wanted to know how I was doing, where the pain was, what was getting better, and what wasn’t. You don’t get that kind of care everywhere.

She’s got tons of experience, she knows her stuff, but more than that—she really gives a damn. She makes your treatment personal and puts everything into helping you heal. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without her help. Can’t say enough good things.”

Bilateral Knee Replacements
“I’ve been a patient of Dena’s for over a decade. In that time, she has supported me through my retirement from nursing and provided outstanding pre- and post-operative care for my bilateral total knee replacements.

Thanks to regular treatments for maintenance and fine-tuning the everyday aches and pains of aging, I continue to feel great and stay active—some of the habits I now rely on actually began as her recommendations while preparing for my surgeries.

Time on Dena’s table is always something I look forward to—whether we’re catching up or she’s teaching me how to better care for my body.

The quality of life Dena has helped my husband and me maintain is truly invaluable. Her care and commitment have become an essential part of our healthy, happy aging journey.”

The Bionic Man

“I had my first major surgery—my left hip replacement—at 69 years old. I was really nervous, especially with all the hospital horror stories you hear in the news. While the surgery went well, the recovery was really rough initially. I remember how painful and swollen I was—and my butt cheek was enormous! The narcotics hit me hard, and although I pulled through, it took a long time.

About 18 months later, my wife and I were visiting Okotoks about nine weeks after my right knee replacement. We were in town looking for a condo with a realtor as we were planning a move from out of province. The trip was a bit much for me—I was still sore and couldn’t keep up with my rehab exercises.

That’s when I booked a session with Dena, hoping to get some relief and make the trip more manageable. At the time, my knee felt tight and stiff, and my range of motion wasn’t where it should’ve been from what they told me. During the session, Dena noticed scar tissue was holding things down and decided to try cupping over the kneecap.

Then—clunk—something let go. I felt instant relief and could suddenly bend my knee so much further! She explained that my kneecap had likely been stuck to my thigh bone, which was restricting movement. That one session changed everything.

Well, we bought the condo as planned and returned home to finish packing and sell our place. Back at my hospital physio group, the physio team was shocked at how much progress I’d made while we were away. I was discharged from physio that same week—just 10 weeks post-op!

Since moving to Okotoks, I’ve continued working with Dena on and off. Her treatments helped make a difficult move and recovery so much more manageable—and restored mobility I didn’t even realize I was missing.

Then, at 75, it was time for another replacement—this time it was my right hip. By then, I’d been seeing Dena regularly for about four years, and we both knew this one was coming. She helped me get stronger with pool work and pre-operative sessions to release my leg and improve mobility. I walked into that third surgery feeling confident—a huge contrast from how I felt going into my first one six years earlier.

The hospital told me to expect a 3–4 day stay because of my heart and lungs, but after two nights I was doing so well, they sent me home.  I did stairs (part of their rules for discharge) and I felt amazing! I had minimal swelling, hardly used any pain meds after a couple of weeks, and I bounced back faster than I ever imagined possible.

Honestly, I wish I’d had Dena’s support and program back when I had my first hip done. She’s made a world of difference in how I’ve aged, recovered, and stayed active through multiple joint replacements.”

Exceptional Post-Surgical Care & Motivation
I was highly recommended to see Dena Denali, and I’m so glad I followed that advice. My first visit with her was two months after my knee replacement surgery. For my second knee replacement early next year, I’ll be booking with her both before and immediately after surgery — that’s how much of a difference she’s made in my recovery.

At my first appointment, Dena conducted a thorough assessment. I was especially relieved that she handled my surgical leg through its full range of motion without causing any pain. Her clinical knowledge is extensive, and she has a unique ability to explain things in a way that makes sense — what to do, why it matters, and how to get the best possible outcome.

She listens, motivates, and genuinely supports my goals — including achieving a 130-degree knee bend! I highly recommend Dena to anyone recovering from joint replacement surgery. She’s amazing.”

Post-Op Knee Recovery
“As a patient of Body Kneads since 2022, I have experienced significant new success in managing my ongoing knee sports injuries (2011 surgery), thanks to Dena’s exceptional care. Her meticulous attention to detail and holistic approach—connecting the entire system rather than focusing solely on the point of injury—has been pivotal in my recovery. This comprehensive method has given me a realistic and successful path toward returning to the activities that matter most to me.”

Bilateral Knee Replacements at 80 years

“I’m a pretty active 84-year-old living independently, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support Dena gave me through both of my knee replacements—six months apart—when I was 80. Following her advice to build strength by swimming 6 months before surgery was one of the best decisions I made. I still swim twice a week because it’s fun and keeps me moving.

After surgery, I went straight from a walker to a cane—never even needing the crutches they gave me. I was well ahead of my physiotherapist’s expectations and didn’t even use all of my Alberta Health Care–sponsored physio sessions because I was doing THAT well! Investing in her joint replacement protocol was worth every bit. Today, I do five flights of stairs in my apartment complex without trouble and honestly feel like I was born with these brand-new knees!

Dena also helped me through a frightening episode of vertigo that left me with severe dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. The room was spinning, and I was overwhelmed. She encouraged me to see my family doctor to rule out anything serious—and thankfully, my doctor confirmed it wasn’t an inner ear issue. The root cause turned out to be muscular tension from spending too many uninterrupted hours at my sewing machine. With just a couple of treatments and a few simple stretches she recommended, I was back on track. Now I follow a routine she taught me that keeps my head clear and my sewing projects moving along without a hitch.

I appreciate how Dena takes the time to explain what’s going on in terms I can understand. Her care and insight has made all the difference!”

Elective Double Mastectomy & Reconstruction

“I started seeing Dena many years ago for hip flexor issues, and over time she has helped me stretch, strengthen, and condition various muscle groups throughout my body.

A couple of years ago, I learned I was a BRCA gene carrier and chose to undergo a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Leading up to the surgery, I worked closely with Dena to release tension in my chest, rib cage, shoulders, back, and abdomen. She also provided targeted exercises to help my body prepare for the procedure and the healing process.

As a result, I experienced no post-surgical tightness or scar tissue buildup. Just one month after surgery, I was cleared to resume massage therapy. Although I was nervous about reinjury, Dena guided me through the exercises and treatment process with reassurance and expertise, which made my recovery smooth and short-lived.

We followed a similar plan for the reconstruction phase — and to this day, I have full flexibility, no issues with the incision area, and no scar tissue restrictions. I highly recommend pre- and post-surgical massage for anyone wanting to support a faster, more complete recovery.”

A Clown car of hospital calamities

“In August 2024, my husband (Fabricator, age 51) nearly died from a clown car of hospital calamities—ruptured appendix, severe sepsis, and a second surgery to repair an intestinal blockage caused by overly enthusiastic stitching from a surgeon. He spent five weeks in the hospital and another six weeks after that recovering—mostly lying around.

By December 2024, he was suffering from persistent back pain and sciatic nerve pain. And I was suffering too—from the nonstop complaining. It was like the back-pain-version of “The Man Cold,” and quite frankly, it was giving me a headache.

Despite months of chiropractic care, nothing was helping. By July 2025, I finally intervened sent him to see Dena—she’s the one who keeps my body moving and pain-free, and I knew she could help.

After just a few sessions using her integrative approach—including her scar release treatment on the massive vertical scar that runs through his navel—he finally found relief. The constant pain, tossing and turning at night, and groaning about “not being able to get comfortable” disappeared. Honestly, it felt like a miracle—he stopped complaining, and my headache vanished right along with it!

Thank you, Dena, for helping him sleep, move, and function again without pain.”

Happy wife, happy life.

LIPOSUCTION GONE WRONG

“I highly recommend Dena as part of your healing journey. After elective liposuction, I experienced serious complications that led to a lengthy hospital stay. Dena was both compassionate and highly effective, helping me manage mobility challenges, reduce edema, and improve scar tissue. She always worked within my current limits while gently encouraging progress. I’m grateful that this experience is now behind me — and thanks in part to Dena’s care, my life has returned to normal.”

Unexpected Herniated Disc Surgery
“An undiscovered herniated disc in my lower back that later required surgery was the catalyst to me first seeing Dena. She was the only professional I found who actually made a difference for my pain and got me moving. And I tried everything – I had other massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and specialists.

Her style is by no means traditional massage – she will dive into your body mechanics to improve your range of motion and function, and will help you understand what is happening, how you can fix it to get you out of pain and improve your quality of life. I used to drive over an hour each way for her treatments because she is so effective.”

TRAM-Flap Post Surgical Recovery
Dena’s skilled and compassionate care has been life-changing.

She is a talented and attentive professional who consistently helps address my specific aches and pains. Her skill, insight, and genuine care set her apart—I never hesitate to recommend her to friends.

As a breast cancer survivor who underwent a TRAM flap reconstruction before meeting Dena, I struggled with frozen shoulder and hip flexor tightness due to post-surgical scarring. Her integrative orthopaedic massage techniques have made a remarkable difference in my recovery and daily function.

Over the past nine years, Dena has supported my posture, strength, and healing—even helping me recover from whiplash after a car accident. Now, as a senior, I’m still competing in Working Equitation and playing ladies’ slow-pitch baseball—because Dena keeps my body moving at its best.”

LONG-TERM DISABILITY CASE SUPPORT

Long-Term Disability - Motor Cycle Accident

“I was referred to Dena by my long-term disability insurance case worker, and she has been instrumental in my return to work after a serious motorcycle accident. In addition to providing pain relief with various massage techniques, Dena identified several key issues and encouraged me to follow up with my family doctor — suggestions that proved essential to my recovery.

I had undergone four surgeries on my right tibia, which resulted in my right leg being 25mm shorter than the left. Dena recognized that this discrepancy was not only making walking painful and exhausting, but likely interfering with my leg’s ability to heal. After discussing it with my doctor, I was prescribed modified footwear with a built-in lift — a change that dramatically improved my mobility. Today, I rarely walk without those shoes, and I can’t imagine regaining this level of function without them.

She also observed that swelling in my injured leg was likely contributing to my daily pain, especially at work, explaining that the blood and lymph flow would be very different with all of my surgeries. She recommended a vascular assessment through my doctor, which revealed that compression socks would be beneficial. Since then, I wear one during every shift and even at home during daily tasks — and it’s made a significant difference in pain management and my ability to stay active.

Dena is truly exceptional!”

LTD Claims Manager Perspective

“Dena is an experienced myofascial therapist who has been instrumental in providing in depth initial assessments and treatment of clients who are currently on disability benefits. I typically send Dena some of my most complicated or complex files specifically because of her strong assessment skills.

I find her initial assessment reports objective and very detailed. She takes a thorough history, reviews relevant medical documentation, takes her time assessing function and provides common sense recommendations and an individualized treatment plan.  Dena is dedicated to helping her clients achieve a level of independent wellness and understands the needs of an insurer in relation to ensuring there is a return to work focus.

Dena is also very collaborative and has demonstrated a willingness to have discussions with other treatment providers or healthcare practitioners working with a client.

I highly recommend referrals to Dena Denali for clients who have experienced past physical trauma via motor vehicle accidents or previous surgeries and for clients with complex chronic pain issues.”

Unexpected amputation

“I saw Dena about two weeks after my second hip replacement for an in-home follow up. She had already helped me prepare for the surgery, and everything went really well. I was happy with how smooth the recovery was starting out.

But during that appointment, while I was lying face-down, Dena spotted something unusual on the back of my calf—the same leg that had just been operated on. She took a closer look and even called my wife over. Dena said it looked like a circulation problem and suggested I contact my vascular surgeon, the same one who had helped me years ago with a heart bipass vein graft.

Dena was right. The leg wasn’t handling things well after the surgery, and about two months later, I ended up needing an above-knee amputation. It was a big shock. But given my history—bad veins in the family and being an ex-smoker—it wasn’t a total surprise.

Even though losing the leg was tough, I believe the work Dena had done before the surgery helped my body cope better. After the amputation, she supported me through the healing process. She helped manage the scar tissue, reduced swelling, and prepared my residual limb for a prosthetic.

What really made a difference was her help with the transition from using a wheelchair to walking again. Pushing the chair for months had strained my hands and arms, and it threw my whole upper body off. Dena treated those issues too—relieving tension and restoring strength. When I first started using the prosthetic, I needed a cane. She worked with me through that stage as well, helping me adjust my muscle balance.

Thanks to her steady care, I was up and walking confidently on two feet again in under six months. I never imagined I’d lose a leg at this stage in life, but I’m so thankful Dena was there to guide me every step of the way.”

Misdiagnosed for 7 years
“I’ve been dealing with a shoulder issue since 2017, and in that time I’ve seen multiple chiropractors and other professionals—none of whom were able to pinpoint the root cause. While not completely disabled I was definitely limited in some of my tasks as an electrician and unable to train or compete at the high level I was used to in martial arts.  It’s been a frustrating journey with little lasting relief.
While visiting from Australia, I booked in with Dena at Body Kneads—and I’m so glad I did. In the very first session, she identified a first rib rotation that had been completely overlooked by everyone else.  It had been presumed by most everyone else that I had a rotator cuff injury or a new shoulder joint pathology. Her depth of knowledge and hands-on approach made a huge difference right away. I experienced more progress in just three sessions than I had in years.
Although I had to return home before the issue was fully resolved, Dena took the time to map out a clear plan for how I could continue healing once back in Australia. That level of care and dedication really stood out.
I highly recommend Dena to anyone dealing with a long-standing or tricky injury. She sees what others miss—and actually makes a difference.”

INJURY RECOVERY PROTOCOL

Headaches, Neck & Upper back Issues with Vertigo

“After suffering a neck injury as a teenager, my life spiraled downward. Chronic headaches, relentless neck, upper back tension with intermittent vertigo symptoms, and a constant sense of limitation left me feeling hopeless. Everything I tried seemed to make it worse. I reached a point where I genuinely thought, “Is this just my life now?”

Then I met Dena—and everything changed.

I can say with complete confidence that Dena gave me my life back. Her work has restored parts of me I thought were gone forever, and I’m endlessly grateful. Whether you’re dealing with pain, dysfunction, or just don’t know where to turn, Dena will either help you heal or guide you to someone who can.

She’s truly gifted, incredibly knowledgeable, and always willing to share that knowledge with curious minds.

You’ve already spent enough time reading this—go book your appointment. You won’t regret it. 😊”

Work Related Debilitating Back Pain

“Dena delivers life changing massage therapy based on highly specialized skills that are extremely rare, and that the vast majority of massage therapists do not possess.  Eight years ago I was in terrible pain with lower back muscle spasm. I had tried everything but kept putting my back out every few months.  An old friend heard my pleas for help on Facebook and said, “Find a massage therapist that specializes in Myofascial Release”.  I found Dena and she helped me get out of pain, and then helped me to be in a more preventative mode in order to avoid the hopeless cycle of pain, spasm, recovery.  If your job requires hours of sitting like my job requires, leading to back pain and spasm, I highly recommend Dena.”

Chronic TMJ & Plantar Fasciitis Issues

“You’ve hit the jackpot if you’ve found Dena!
Dena is one of the most intuitive, compassionate, intelligent, and comprehensive practitioners I’ve ever worked with. She has resolved my chronic TMJ issues, eliminated my plantar fasciitis, and—most importantly—keeps me functioning at my best for daily physical training.

Her integrative, results-driven approach goes far beyond typical massage therapy. If you’re looking for someone who truly understands the body and how to support it, Dena is the one. ❤️”

Acute Ribcage, Shoulder & Neck Pain

“Consistent Care, Meaningful Results — On and Off the Course

I’ve been seeing Dena for over 10 years now. I visit her regularly for ongoing maintenance to stay pain-free — which is essential in my work as a nurse, where I often find myself in awkward positions to help patients. Her therapeutic approach is comprehensive, and she always takes the time to explain what’s happening at the muscular and skeletal level. She also provides targeted stretches I can do at home to maintain mobility and prevent further discomfort. I recommend Dena to anyone looking for effective, results-driven therapeutic massage.

Recently, I began experiencing acute pain in my rib cage, neck, and shoulders and couldn’t figure out the cause. Dena quickly connected the dots — I had taken up golf over the winter, using indoor simulators and driving ranges to prepare for the season. She explained that while an 18-hole game takes over four hours with plenty of breaks and short putts, my hour-long lessons involved constant, repetitive swings without adequate recovery.

Once I incorporated proper stretching into my lessons and weekly routine, it made a world of difference. I’m now golfing 2–3 times a week with less pain, more enjoyment, and even better scores — thanks to Dena’s insight and care.”

Elbow Tendonitis, Vertigo, Hip & Back Issues

“I initially came to Dena with back and hip issues, which she resolved quickly and effectively. At one appointment, she noticed something unusual with discoloured skin on my elbow and asked about it. I told her I’d been getting cortisone injections for tendonitis pain which coincidentally were not working. To my surprise, Dena discovered the issue wasn’t isolated to the elbow at all—it was actually originating from my neck and shoulder. What had been treated with injections was only a symptom of a deeper problem, which Dena was able to identify and address.

More recently, I was in a terrible motor vehicle accident and began experiencing vertigo symptoms like dizziness and nausea—issues I never imagined she could help with. But once again, Dena worked her magic determining it wasn’t an inner ear disturbance but instead it was related to the whiplash. I walked into her office feeling completely off, and left the table feeling 100% better.

Her ability to pinpoint the root cause of symptoms and treat the body as an integrated system continues to amaze me. Dena’s insight and holistic approach have made a real, lasting difference in my overall health.”

Vertigo

“I was suffering with terrible vertigo for about two weeks in mid-January. I couldn’t drive, couldn’t turn over in bed—the world was spinning, and I was really scared. I had already been to physiotherapy, but the exercises they gave me weren’t helping at all.

Then one day, my husband bumped into Dena at the grocery store and shared what I was going through. She listened and suggested that my symptoms might not be vestibular after all, but instead caused by tension in the muscles of my neck.

He came home and told me about their conversation, so I booked an appointment—and she was right! I felt so much better just getting off the table after my first visit, and by the second visit, I felt 100% again.

As we talked more about when it all started, Dena helped me connect the dots. I’d been doing some intense crafting in the fall leading up to Christmas—knitting and quilting for my five grandkids. I had spent long hours with my head down, working on projects for weeks. Even though I finished everything before the holidays, the accumulated tension had finally caught up with me.

Dena showed me some stretches and exercises to use while I’m crafting. She even suggested putting a kitchen timer next to my Lazy-Boy so I’d remember to take breaks and move when I’m deep in a knitting project.

I’m really thankful Bruce ran into her at Sobey’s that day. I would have hated to give up making things for my family—but now that I know how to help myself while I craft, I can keep doing what I love without the fear of vertigo returning.”

Long Standing Shoulder Injury

“I started seeing Dena just over two years ago for a longstanding shoulder injury that had never responded well to previous treatments. From the first appointment, Dena was attentive and clearly knowledgeable, using her extensive experience to help me achieve relief far faster than I ever expected.

As both a registered nurse and a high-level athlete, I’ve continued to work with Dena for sports-related injuries, work strain, and everyday aches and pains. What sets Dena apart is her thorough assessment process andexplains her findings in a clear, down-to-earth way. What sets Dena apart is how she empowers you with personalized stretches, activity modifications, and exercises to help keep you off the table and feeling your best.

Dena genuinely cares about her patients. She follows up after treatments, checks in between sessions, and offers helpful resources when additional support is needed. I highly recommend her to anyone recovering from an injury or preparing for surgery. Her approach is comprehensive and never superficial—she gets to the root of the problem instead of applying temporary fixes.”

My "not" Tennis Elbow & Headache Relief

“Six months. I spent six months in physiotherapy for elbow tendonitis—and I was still in pain and incredibly frustrated.

I’d been reading Dena’s “Ask The Expert” column in the paper for years, so I finally decided to give her a try.

During her assessment, she looked at all of me, not just my elbow. She ran some tests and told me I actually failed the elbow tendonitis screens—which meant that wasn’t the problem at all. It turned out the real issue was referral pain from my triceps!

Not only did she resolve the pain in my elbow, but she also—almost accidentally—got rid of the headaches I’d been experiencing. I had only mentioned them on my intake form because she asked; they weren’t even why I came in. But because of how she approaches the body as a whole, treating my neck and shoulder as part of the bigger picture, I ended up feeling better in ways I never expected.”

Sudden Onset Scary Burning Pain

“About seven months ago, I was rudely awakened by severe pain throughout my body. I had experienced pain before, but this was something new. A burning sensation ran from my head down to my toes enveloping my entire body. It was a signal to do something quick. I remember months before a friend of mine recommended Dena. I had been putting off reaching out- but this situation was severe, and I could not ignore it. Usually filled for many weeks; Dena had a cancellation, and I was able to see her in a few days. The first treatment already gave me some relief. Within four treatments, I was feeling secure that I had given my body what it required. Dena is an intuitive, committed and gifted body worker. She is aligned with healing and an essential resource for our community.”

Hamstring, Quad, Calf Strains with Patella Femoral Syndrome

“Over the past 10 years, I’ve dealt with a series of leg injuries—including hamstring, calf, and quad strains, as well as ongoing patellofemoral syndrome. These issues made it incredibly hard to keep doing the things I love, from staying active to simply moving without discomfort.

Since starting myofascial release therapy in July 2024, I’ve experienced a level of relief and mobility I didn’t think was possible. Dena’s deep understanding of the body and the precision of the treatment helped release long-held tension and improved my overall function. I’m finally getting back to doing what I enjoy, with less pain, more freedom in my movement and without the constant fear of injury. Dena has truly been a game-changer for my recovery and quality of life.”

Severe Hamstring Strain Becomes a Transformative Journey

“I first met Dena in the fall of 2015, after a severe hamstring injury during my first year competing at the Huntsman Senior Games in St. George, Utah. At the time, I was simply looking for someone who could help me recover and get back on the ball field. Little did I know that meeting Dena would be the beginning of a long and transformative journey.

Over the years, Dena has not only helped me heal from injury — and there have been multiple — but has also taught me an incredible amount about kinesiology, body mechanics, and myofascial release. Her expertise, combined with her patient, thoughtful approach, has made me more in tune with my body than I have ever been in my life.

Now at 60 years old, I’m still competing as a serious slo-pitch player on both local and travelling teams, and I also spend 4–5 days a week in the gym. I credit much of my longevity, performance, and ability to train at this level to Dena’s care and knowledge. She doesn’t just treat the symptoms — she helps you understand your body, how it moves, and how to keep it performing at its best.

Dena’s passion for her work and genuine care for her clients make her an exceptional therapist and an invaluable part of my athletic journey. I am deeply grateful for the difference she has made in my health, performance, and overall well-being.”

Adductor Tear Masquerading as Glute/Hamstring

“I first visited Dena after injuring myself at the gym.  I thought it was a glute or hamstring pull, and I was hoping time would be the magic cure to “heal up”.  Almost 5 weeks later the pain was still persistent making driving, walking, and sitting difficult.  I was unable to do any quick movements without my leg giving out and getting back to the gym was out of the question.

I arrived for my initial assessment and Dena got to work with a review of my history including injuries, pains, ailments and past activities/sports.  Dena did muscles tests along with observations while doing specific movements with the entire body being assessed as she reviewed skeletal and muscular charts of the body with me.  She took her time and explained what she was seeing and what her concerns were.  Well over an hour later she was ready to make some recommendations and treatment suggestions.

Dena had determined that my groin was the biggest injury that I was suffering from and there was some concern about potential lower back disc bulging.  Due to the lower back, we spent some time assessing the pros and cons of treatment while I was there that day and ultimately moved forward with treatment.  Dena spent significant time walking me through what she suspected was going on and fully answered all my questions.  She took the time to ensure we were both confident and comfortable with the treatment plan before moving forward.

The first treatment was 75 mins focused from hip to knee on both sides of my body.  This allowed Dena to truly focus on the problem area and make the most progress possible in a single session.  After the treatment was completed, Dena then spent time going through specific exercises I should be doing along with having me perform them to ensure my technique was correct.

I left feeling confident in Dena’s knowledge, excited about having someone care and wanting to help, along with being armed with the power and knowledge to help myself recover.  My drive home was the first time in weeks that I was not uncomfortable and constantly shifting to find a less painful position.  It was immediately apparent that her work was already making a difference.

Dena followed up with a 30-minute phone call the next morning to check in on how I was feeling.  She also included further exercises she thought would help me and let me know that she was available at any time if anything changed or if I had questions/concerns.

About 4 days after my second treatment I realized any constant pain had vanished and I was comfortable enough with my ability to move to finally return to the gym.  I can not recommend Dena enough.  After 5 treatments I know we still have work to do but the change has already been significant.”

Chronic Piriformis Pain... Among others
“I began treatment with Dena in 2018 for a nagging issue related to my piriformis muscle.  I had been under the care of another massage therapist as well as receiving chiropractic care which did not address the issue.  Dena correctly assessed the true cause of the problem and we were able to eliminate it.  Over the past five years, I have had various other muscular/skeletal related issues including neck pain, foot pain, etc. which I have been able to successfully alleviate or mitigate with Dena’s treatment and advice.  Her knowledge and explanation of issues along with appropriate treatment plans are second to none and often exceed what I have experienced from physiotherapists or chiropractors.  As a physically active, middle aged person who is strongly interested in maintaining my ability to do the activities that I love, I highly recommend Dena to anyone who is looking for a knowledgeable and effective massage therapy expert.”

Muscle-Related Foot Pain - Instant Relief!

“After refereeing my first game in a 6-game Junior A Hockey Tournament, the heel of my right foot swelled up and I could barely walk never mind skate. Dena was incredibly kind and fit me in the very next day — on her day off — to help.

Using her deep knowledge and expertise, she assessed my leg and quickly identified a tight calf muscle as the root of the problem. Within minutes of targeted stretching and myofascial release, I was walking again — and the pain had eased significantly.  My family had speculated plantar fasciitis or ankle misalignment — Good thing I didn’t follow those leads or I would have been self-medicating the wrong body parts!

Thanks to her treatment, I was able to complete the remaining five games on skates, which would have been impossible otherwise. I highly recommend Dena for fast, effective relief when you need it most!”

Chronic Hip & Knee Pain

“I highly recommend Dena’s services!

I’ve been coming from Calgary to Okotoks to see Dena since 2022, originally seeking help for chronic knee and hip pain. She is incredibly knowledgeable and was able to quickly assess the root cause of my discomfort and implement an effective treatment plan.

Thanks to her skilled hands and integrated approach, I’m able to stay active in the outdoor activities I love. Whether I’m hiking, house cleaning part-time, or volunteering, I can move comfortably and confidently. Her flexible scheduling makes it easy to fit treatments into my busy life.”

Baker's Cyst
“I had been dealing with pain around the outside and back of my knee from a Baker’s Cyst—they said it was likely caused by years of climbing ladders in my work as a roofer. I assumed it was just something I’d have to live with.

Then I met Dena. I couldn’t believe how she was able to get to the why behind the problem. It wasn’t just the hands-on treatment that impressed me—it was the way she educated me about what was really going on and showed me what to add to my workouts to stop it from coming back.

I used to think this pain was just a fact of life. Now, when I feel that twinge coming on, I know it’s usually because I’ve been slacking on my “homework.” I get back on track with the exercises Dena taught me and can usually turn things around on my own.”

Ankle Fusion & Back Pain

“Decades of Experience — One Standout Therapist

I had an ankle fusion following an accident in my youth, which gradually led to chronic back pain as I aged. Over the past 40 years, I’ve seen many massage therapists — but Dena is by far the best I’ve ever had.

She is highly trained, exceptionally intelligent, and has an incredible ability to assess the root cause of whatever is bothering you. Once she identifies the issue, her skill in resolving it is unmatched.

Dena is a compassionate, caring professional who genuinely invests in her clients’ well-being. Her expertise has made a real difference in my mobility and comfort. I can’t recommend her highly enough.”

Persistent Sciatic Pain
“Life-Changing Relief from Sciatic Pain”

I was struggling with persistent sciatic nerve pain down my left leg, and after trying everything else, I decided to give deep tissue fascial release massage a try. Booking with Dena was the best decision I could have made. Even before my first appointment, she called to understand my needs and concerns—something that really stood out to me as incredibly professional and caring.

I’m now pain free,  Dena’s expertise, attention to detail, and genuine commitment to healing made all the difference. Now when I see her for other conerns she still continues to go above and beyond—always providing helpful stretches and preventative tips that have made a huge impact on my overall well-being.

I can’t recommend Dena enough. She’s not just a massage therapist—she’s a true healer.”

Severe "Urgent Care" Back Pain
“I came to Dena with severe lower back pain that had me in urgent care more than once. When I had a flare up it was days of not being able to walk or move around without being in agony and having to take super strong pain killers. Dena was amazing, not only did I get in for an appointment quickly, she knew what was bothering me within a matter of minutes.
She identified that the issue wasn’t actually just my back (posture) but it was my hip flexors. I was like, ‘What the heck is a hip flexor?!’ She took the time to explain everything she was doing, step by step, and answered all of my questions with patience and clarity.
Her deep tissue work was incredibly effective, but what set her apart was how much she educated me throughout her process. She gave me personalized suggestions and stretches to do at home; my favorite is the ‘Banana Marriage Proposal’! Doing these exercises at home ensured that the work we did in her sessions would actually stick. She even went as far as to talk me through proper walking (butt clenches – who knew) and the importance of proper footwear – things most of us never think about but it does make a huge difference.
Thanks to Dena, not only has my pain all but gone away, if I have a flare up it is significantly less painful and more easy to manage. I feel more in tune with how my body moves and what it needs. I can feel when I am getting tight and know how to adjust my walk, start doing my exercises, use my medicine stick and rest.
I more than highly recommend her to anyone dealing with chronic pain, tension, or just wanting a deeper understanding of how to help support and heal your muscles and your body.”

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT DENA

Exceptional At Her Craft
“I have been a patient of Dena’s for many years, seeing her on and off as needed.  Of all of the practitioners I have visited for various health challenges, Dena is by far the most knowledgeable when it comes to the anatomy of the body.  She knows not only muscle origins and insertions, but how the muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons work together for proper function.
Dena spends the time necessary to get to the root of the misalignment or issue, educating me along the way so I understand the rationale behind the exercises she prescribes and the suggestions she makes. I find it helpful to see visually what’s happening with my body, so I really appreciate the detailed diagrams on her treatment room wall. Dena is exceptional at her craft. This is not your typical relaxation massage, but a strategic assessment and treatment to solve the issue.”

Grateful for the Referral — and the Results!

“Dena, I’m so grateful Jody referred me to you. When we first spoke, I’ll admit I didn’t understand half of what you said — but I figured, why not give it a try?

Nearly two years later, I can’t thank you enough. You’ve helped me feel better, move better, and stay working in a physically demanding job as a dog groomer. Your expertise and genuine passion for what you do shine through at every appointment.

You are absolutely amazing at your work, and I won’t go anywhere else!”

She's Kept me active for 20 years

“I’ve been a regular patient of Dena’s for over 20 years. Thanks to her consistent and skilled care, my body has stayed strong and mobile with very few issues.

Throughout the years, I’ve kept an active lifestyle: walking or running daily, golfing two to three times a week, and staying committed to movement. While I’ve had the occasional hip, shoulder, or lower back concern, Dena’s approach has always helped resolve things quickly—before they became lasting problems.

Now in my 70s, I’m still able to enjoy an active life. I truly believe that Dena’s treatments have played a key role in maintaining my physical health and mobility all these years.”

Lasting Relief after Years of Searching

“I’ve received therapeutic massage for many years, but it wasn’t until I started seeing Dena at Body Kneads over the past three years that I finally found the lasting relief and rehabilitation I’d been seeking.

I work in sales and spend countless hours driving all over Alberta — the physical toll on my body has been immense. Thanks to Dena’s treatments, I’m moving better, feeling better, and able to keep doing what I love.”

Infant Puppy not anti-social but sore

“I’ve been an Australian Shepherd CKC-registered breeder for 20 years, averaging about one litter per year. Since 2020, I’ve welcomed Dena into my program to work on my litters between 2–4 weeks of age — and the benefits have been undeniable.

In one memorable case, I had a puppy that kept isolating himself from his littermates. At first, I assumed it was a temperament issue — maybe he was just shy. But over time, I noticed in the play area that something seemed “off.” When Dena came to treat the litter, I mentioned my concerns. She quickly identified that the pup wasn’t shy — he was sore and avoiding interaction because he didn’t want to be jumped on. After just one treatment, he was full of life and engaging like a completely different dog! I often think about how that puppy’s life could’ve turned out if we had mislabeled him as aloof — likely developing behavioral issues from associating play with pain.

Another time, a visitor accidentally stepped on a 6-week-old puppy. Naturally, we were both distressed. Dena came over right away to assess her. Thankfully, while the pup was tender, she had no major injury. I continued to monitor her closely, ready to involve the vet if needed, but Dena’s assessment and gentle treatment gave me peace of mind — and the pup grew up healthy with no lasting effects.

Even when there aren’t any obvious concerns, I still have Dena treat every litter. The way the pups respond during and after her sessions is remarkable. After all my years breeding, I hadn’t truly considered how even a “normal” birth can create physical tension — breech positioning, time spent stuck in the birth canal — all of these can leave lasting impact. I now see early intervention as a vital part of raising well-adjusted puppies, and I’m grateful to have Dena as part of my program.”

Early Intervention for puppy mobility

“Although I had initially hoped Dena could assess my litter of Cardigan Welsh Corgis earlier, her visit just before the puppies turned four weeks old turned out to be perfect timing. The intention was a general wellness check—to catch any subtle issues before they became bigger concerns. And I’m so glad we did it.

In the days leading up to her visit, I had started to notice that one of my smaller females was struggling to maintain traction with her hind legs. I ruled out the flooring, as none of her littermates were experiencing the same issue, and began to suspect something specific to just her alone.

During her in-home canine massage assessment, Dena identified myofascial adhesions around the puppy’s lumbar spine and hindquarters. She gently released those restrictions and noted that this pup had noticeably less muscle development compared to her similarly sized littermates. Dena gave me easy, age-appropriate exercises to support safe strength development—both through flat-ground movements and play-based interaction.

To my delight, just over 24 hours later, that same puppy confidently climbed a play-pen obstacle her siblings had conquered a week earlier. I’ll continue to follow Dena’s guidance, but I already see clear signs of progress. I’m confident this puppy is well on her way to full strength.

The rest of the litter received a clean bill of health, with only minor findings typical of growing pups. As a CKC breeder, I take pride in raising structurally sound, well-developed puppies, and this kind of preventative bodywork gives me peace of mind. It helps me understand when something seems “off,” and more importantly—what I can do about it.”

Breech Puppies with Adhesions

“While chatting with Dena at a dog show about a young litter I had on the ground, she offered to do a once-over just to show me the impact her treatments could have. Honestly, I didn’t have any concerns—I felt my puppies were thriving well.

But I was genuinely amazed at how the pups responded to her short treatments. I could clearly see when she found areas of tension, and how quickly the puppies released it. It was subtle, but unmistakable.

As she worked, Dena asked about the speed of whelping and whether any of the puppies had been born breech. I’d taken notes at the time, mostly just out of almost 30 years of habit, and when I checked—I discovered two of the six pups had indeed been breech. Sure enough, those were the two with the most restriction through the neck and shoulders. It was fascinating to make that connection.

I’ll absolutely be having Dena back to go over my next litter—breech or not!”

Life After Cancer Surgery

“When Daisy, my 15-year-old shepherd cross, underwent cancer tumor surgery on her right hip in February 2025, I wasn’t sure how well she’d bounce back. She had always been an energetic, driven dog—able to go for hours exploring trails, sniffing out critters, and just enjoying life. But in the many months before her surgery, her mobility had declined. Walks shortened to 30 minutes before discomfort set in, and her gait and enthusiasm faded. By the one-hour mark, it was clear she was hurting.

Her surgery left a 6″ scar on her hip and two additional smaller scars from other tumor removals.  We visited Dena for canine massage therapy at Body Kneads at 6 weeks post-op so we could focus on the scars. The difference was remarkable.

Dena provided skilled in-office treatment and taught me how to stretch Daisy’s muscles gently at home. She explained how to manage scar tissue and recommended using Bio-Oil and Traumacare to help the incisions heal properly. Her guidance gave me confidence and clarity—and most importantly, it gave Daisy fast, visible results.

Within weeks, Daisy’s energy returned. Her walking speed increased, her endurance improved, and now I consider her to be fully recovered—aside from the hair still growing back where she was shaved. We can walk more than two hours again, without any signs of pain or slowing down.

Daisy got her life back—and I got more quality time with my best girl.  Thanks for your help, Dena!”

Canine Cancer, Aging & Mobility

“Koda’s Story — Comfort and Dignity in Her Final Chapter

My senior rescue dog Koda was living with a terminal cancer diagnosis. The tumour had severely impacted her mobility, and she had become increasingly sedentary. We used to enjoy long walks together, but as her condition progressed, even short outings became too difficult. I began noticing rapid signs of aging—she struggled to get up, move around, and manage stairs.

We came to see Dena, and the difference after just one session was remarkable. Koda moved with more ease and looked visibly brighter. Dena was incredibly gentle, patient, and attentive to Koda’s comfort, working completely at her pace. She even brought treats, which helped Koda relax and cooperate early in the session.

It was amazing to watch Koda settle into the treatment, and her deep sighs said it all—she was comfortable, relieved, and grateful.

Although we eventually had to say goodbye, I’m incredibly thankful we were able to give Koda meaningful pain relief and improved quality of life in her final months.

Thank you, Dena, for your kindness and care.”

He Literally had a smile on his face

“We thought that we were going to have to say our final good-byes to Harley on more than one occasion since the new year.  He was sleeping a lot, he had difficulty getting up and laying down, and his walks were getting shorter and shorter.

After his massage with Dena, his body seemed more relaxed and the tension from carrying all of his aging discomfort was so improved. His butt wiggled again and his tail wagged more freely.  He literally had a smile on his face. We could see the relief and the content in his behaviour overall.”
